Hockey World Cup: From ‘miles off’ to summer potential, England look at positives

Captain Hollie Pearne-Webb and coach David Ralph both spoke of fine margins after England were denied a first World Cup semi-final in 12 years.

England will now have little time off as they enter Commonwealth Games mode and aim for a first gold medal in the women’s event.

Argentina were the superior side against England on Wednesday as they kept up their unbeaten World Cup record over their rivals.

  1. I thought England played really well and could well have sneaked an equaliser at the end. Pearne-Webb had an unbelievable game -without her Argentina would have been out of sight by half time

  2. Argentina have better stick skills than England and do not give away the ball easily, something we must improve if we are to compete at the top level. Our forwards must react more quickly to ball played into the circle ` getting low with their stick on the ground looking for a deflection, we had several opportunities to do this but we failed to anticipate the play and therefore the chances were gone!
    Composure in front of goal is so important and having the confidence to hit the ball while it is moving, again if we had the confidence to have done this we would have, with a successful penalty shootout, been in the semi final.
    Nevertheless we move on to the CWG knowing that we are capable of winning a gold medal.
