Worthing celebrate on pitch after 125th anniversary year

From one celebation to another, Worthing HC have continued to make ground following their 125th anniversary last year.

Worthing had a hugely successful recently-completed season, as two of the adult teams have successfully earned Sussex league promotion.

The Worthing men’s 4s team earned promotion to Sussex Division One after completing the season, winning 15 games out of 22 and securing the least amount of goals conceded in the league thanks to their exceptional goalkeeper Alex Hall.

David Edmondson, WHC Men’s 4s team manager, said: “We started strong, had a little wobble after Christmas but then pulled it back and got our promotion, which we are really pleased about. A lot of the games have been very tight, it is a competitive league and we are all really happy and looking forward to next season.”

The WHC women’s 1a took it right to the wire, needing a draw in their final, rescheduled game to secure second place in the league table and promotion.

A victorious 8-3 win meant they finished the season winning 12 games overall and a ticket up into South East Women’s Division 1 Martlets.

Women’s 1’s captain, Nikki Burley, said: “The pride and passion of this team, their commitment to training and playing availability has led to us earning our promotion. Our aim was to play for a top three end of season position and after Christmas we felt confident of achieving this. Our belief in ourselves grew each week and we played the game of hockey we wanted.

“I could not be more proud, so proud of everyone for playing and contributing to us earning promotion to league one.”

Worthing has eight adult teams and a developing junior section of four teams. They are based at The Angmering School, with its own clubhouse

Established in 1896, Worthing Hockey Club was one of the founding Sussex County Hockey Association members, enjoying considerable success as a premier Sussex and South of England Club over the years.
