There was symmetry across two sports unfamiliar with sporting success in Canada this year. First, Canada’s hockey women qualified for their first Women’s World Cup since 1994 before Canada’s soccer men qualified for the Qatar World Cup, the first time they had done so in 36 years.
Canada roundly beat Jamaica 4-0 to qualify for the soccer jamboree later this year, when 30,000 fans in Toronto went wild. The 1986 Mexico tournament was their last foray and for 2022 there will be an Englishman, John Herdman, at the helm.
