Plans to transform playing fields have stirred objection from midlands side Bloxwich Hockey Club, which claims it was misled about the provision of suitable facilities under the redevelopment scheme.
Walsall Council’s proposals, recommended for approval earlier this month, include upgraded park facilities featuring a new pavilion, multi-use games areas, and a synthetic sports surface. The transformation is part of a broader initiative to enhance local green space and recreation offerings.
However, members of the 123-year-old hockey club assert that they were promised an artificial pitch that could accommodate field hockey, tennis, rugby, and other sports. They argue the planned surface will cater predominantly to football and lacks the Gen-2 artificial turf required for competitive hockey matches.
Rob Foster, a member of Bloxwich Hockey club for 51 years, said: “This club turned me from a shy lad with zero confidence into a confident person with lots of respect and community values.
“I have seen this happen hundreds of times. It would be a complete disgrace and travesty if the sports pitch being put down was unfit for hockey.”
Bloxwich HC says the council’s change of course has left it without a viable home ground after the resurfacing need at its previous site at Sneyd pitch went unresolved. The club highlighted its role in community sport development, particularly noting the expansion of its junior section.
Despite 29 public objections, mostly from hockey club affiliates, the council’s planning committee has moved forward with the redevelopment. Representatives from the council have been contacted for comment on the surface specifications and future provision for hockey players.
