Australian hockey great Jamie Dwyer has made a high-profile move into cricket, becoming involved in a new Twenty20 league in a cross-code partnership that includes former Australian captain Steve Waugh.
Dwyer has been confirmed as a co-owner with the Amsterdam Flames, one of the foundation teams in the newly announced European Twenty20 League (ETPL), which is set to launch later this year.
The franchise is co-owned by a consortium led by Waugh, with Dwyer, the five-time Olympian and former Kookaburras captain, joining the group to provide high-performance and leadership expertise drawn from his decorated hockey career.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of men’s hockey, Dwyer said the opportunity to work alongside Waugh and help shape a new cricket competition was too compelling to ignore.
The Flames have signed Australia internationals Steve Smith and Mitch Marsh as two of their overseas players.
Waugh said: “I’m not signing up to a Mickey Mouse T20 competition. This is the real deal.”
The franchises were reportedly sold for £11.1m over a 10-year period.
