Wales hockey players forced to dig even deeper to play for country

Wales men’s players were unsure of lining up for the upcoming FIH World Cup qualifiers in Chile due to escalating financial costs.

The Welsh team are no strangers to ‘paying to play’ for their country, but players were estimated to fork out as much as £4,000 for the first half of this year.

Jacob Draper admitted before the new year that Wales “weren’t in a great spot” while Hockey Wales CEO said the governing body was “unsure” whether teams would be able to travel before utilising future performance funding. This month Wales men will compete in Chile, while their women’s counterparts will travel to India as they aim for a first World Cup since 1983.
