‘No one should be left to fight this alone’ is the message from a teacher who suffered a life-changing brain injury during a hockey match six years ago.
Claerwen Render, 42, has now spoken out about her battle for justice, after being forced to abandon legal action due to escalating court costs and lack of insurance support. She has endured a headache or migraine every day for over six years and still ‘no day is the same’ with her symptoms. “I’m just managing the best I can to avoid the severity I experienced in the first three years,” she says.
Render, who was a head of year and associate assistant headteacher and now works part-time in the mornings, sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-concussion syndrome in November 2019 while playing in a league fixture for Clwb Hoci Rhuthun in Denbighshire. Her injury occurred 13 days before Sam Ward’s horrific injury at Lee Valley.
“I’m still in disbelief,” Render told The Hockey Paper. “Firstly, that a brain injury wasn’t covered by the insurance provided by Hockey Wales, and secondly, that after following legal advice and preparing for a three-year court process, I was forced to discontinue the case due to financial pressure.”
