Tributes have been paid from across the Irish hockey community following the death of Brian Caruth, a long-serving administrator and former president of CI Annadale Hockey Club, who died on New Year’s Eve.
Caruth was regarded as one of the most influential figures in Northern Irish hockey, with decades of involvement as a player and volunteer.
In a tribute, his son said Caruth “meant so much to so many,” describing him as a devoted family man whose passion for hockey shaped both his personal and professional life.
Hockey Ireland said it was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Brian Caruth,” adding that he was “a hugely respected figure whose contribution to the game will be felt for many years to come”.
The governing body praised his leadership and commitment to developing hockey at all levels.
Ulster Hockey described Caruth’s death as “a deep loss to our hockey family”. In a statement posted on social media, the organisation said he would be remembered for his “integrity, enthusiasm and tireless work on behalf of clubs and players”.
CI Annadale Hockey Club, where Caruth served as president, said: “Brian gave so much of his time, energy and wisdom to this club,” the statement read. “His leadership and kindness left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Former players and officials also shared tributes online, with many describing Caruth as a mentor who encouraged young athletes and fostered a strong sense of community within the sport. One former colleague said he was “a guiding presence who always put people first”
