How to be a top Hockey India League franchise? Hyderabad Toofans on auction near mishaps, science and finance

Siddarth Pandey, the commentator turned Hyderabad Toofans team director, is reliving the heart-pounding moment as they attempted to outbid their Hockey India League franchise rivals to land Zach Wallace for the 2024/25 season after a seven-year hiatus.

The previous night, Pandey had a conversation with Wallace via a friend in the UK. Wallace was confused as to how the auction was playing out. What Pandey didn’t divulge was the franchise’s interest in the playmaker.

The following morning in Delhi, the team’s driver arrived late, the franchise staff arriving “two to three minutes” before the auction started.
