Gregory Thomas Shirvington, a Brisbane-area hockey coach charged with sexually assaulting teenage girls, was found dead on Dec 9, the same day he was scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court, Queensland police and media reported.
Body-worn footage released by police showed detectives arresting Shirvington at his home on the day of the charges. In the days following his arrest, multiple additional alleged victims, including women now in their 30s and 40s, came forward with similar accusations.
Shirvington had been a long-time figure in Queensland’s hockey community.
He was listed as a life member of the Ascot Arana Hockey Club and had coached at Kedron Wavell Services Hockey Club. He also served as a senior technical official with the Kedron Wavell Wolves club.
Hockey Queensland confirmed that Shirvington had been suspended and barred from all hockey-related activities this year while Sport Integrity Australia and Queensland Police investigated complaints against him.
A spokesperson for Hockey Queensland said the organisation was aware of the allegations, had referred the matter to authorities, and that Shirvington had no involvement with the sport since February.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said Shirvington’s death would be referred to the coroner, and no further comment was immediately available.
