‘None of the students speak about it’: University initiation culture continues to run deep

Initiations and hazing are banned by universities across the country, but with no legal rule or legitimate enforcement there is still a dark side to being a part of sports clubs that continues today.

It wasn’t uncommon to see friends recount their socials where wine bottles were taped to both hands until they emptied them, or see students out on Wednesday nights stumbling around in all sorts of outfits.

In October, shock rippled through Newcastle University’s student body as a text sent into a hockey club group chat was revealed to encourage sexual assault and brought up potential spiking by a member of the club.
