‘I had burnout and arthritis – yoga got me back loving hockey’

Two years ago, Rory Penrose could barely grip a hockey stick. Diagnosed with arthritis in his hands, feet and back at just 20, the former Winchester and Loughborough talent had been forced to stop playing the game that had consumed his youth.

Now 22, and fresh from making his England debut last year, Penrose is back on the hockey radar and credits yoga for helping him find the balance he needed. This after chasing the international dream by playing too much hockey alongside university life.

“I basically overtrained and I think I wasn’t finding balance kind of off the pitch as well and that led to me really sick for two months first,” he recalls of the difficult spell in March 2023.
