‘Barry Middleton can carry, look, distribute, score, the lot’

Ellie Mackenzie has enjoyed a whirlwind 12 months since joining Surbiton in 2024, a move that has accelerated her rise on both the domestic circuit and international hockey stage with Scotland women. At the heart of her progression, she says, is the influence of one particular hockey great: Barry Middleton.

“I’ve come on a lot in the past year,” the 22-year-old admits. “Someone recently who I think has been a huge help for me in my performances is Barry.
