Pakistan have been confirmed to compete in the men’s FIH Pro League in the upcoming season – six years after they were suspended from the inaugural league.
Their participation means a return of India v Pakistan Test matches in the seventh running of the nine-strong global league.
The Pakistan Hockey Federation has received 250m rupees (£653,000) for the Green Shirts to compete.
However it is reported that the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) have asked the PHF to comply with financial matters before funds are released.
The PHF has three days to compile a report on travel plans, schedules and other admin details.
In 2019, Pakistan were forced to pull out on the eve of their first Pro League campaign, citing “inevitable circumstances”.
For this year’s competition, they had already asked for an extension after being asked to participate by the FIH.
Pakistan were promoted through the FIH Hockey Nations Cup. New Zealand won the final against Pakistan before Hockey New Zealand took the decision not to enter the Black Sticks.
FIH president Tayyab Ikram said: “Great to see Pakistan back in elite competition – this is a truly impactful milestone for world hockey.
“Their return marks not only the comeback of a team with such a rich and storied history, but also an exciting boost to the visibility and reach of the FIH Hockey Pro League. I can already anticipate an enhanced visibility of the Pro League with Pakistan’s participation.”
Pakistan will join Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, Spain and champions Netherlands in the upcoming men’s season.
Pakistan replace Ireland, who were relegated at the end of the previous season following their ninth place finish in the league.
