Oxon Boys U17 hockey team completed a remarkable season, winning all eight of their South AC Boys U17 fixtures to finish as undefeated county champions.
The flawless campaign marks the culmination of a three-year development plan led by team manager Matt Cook and coach Jim Chadbourne. The pair have overseen the squad’s journey from grassroots to dominance, with players drawn from schools and clubs across Oxfordshire.
“We had a three-year project to build a team — it hasn’t happened overnight,” said Cook.
“We’ve worked with a squad of 21 boys from various backgrounds, developing them not just as athletes but as individuals.”
Cook emphasised the focus on building identity and camaraderie within the squad.
“It’s our last season playing county hockey together, so there was a lot of emotion in wanting to finish it right. The boys have formed a bond and will carry this shared experience with them.”
While early seasons focused on tactical and technical development, Cook said the coaching approach evolved as players matured. “When they were 14 or 15, we drilled gameplay and skills, but as they got older, it became more about personal growth and decision-making.”
Reflecting on the perfect season, Cook added: “We’ve done something special and I don’t think we’ll see it repeated anytime soon. This was all about the boys and Jim — their commitment and effort throughout the season made it happen.”
