After an impressive 37 years on the pitch, Gillian Jack has officially retired from playing for Ardrossan Academy Former Pupils Hockey Club — a decision she describes as “bittersweet.”
“Hockey has been such a huge part of my life,” said Jack, who started playing for the club in 1988. “I’ve met some of my closest friends through it. It’s been more than a sport — it’s been a passion, a community, and a constant in my life for nearly four decades.”
Gillian first picked up a stick at 14 years old and never looked back. Over the years, she became a key figure at North Ayrshire Ladies, captaining the side, mentoring younger players, and helping drive the club forward.
“I remember the early days when we’d play wherever we could find a pitch,” she told Ayrshire today. “The sport has come a long way, and I’m proud to have been part of that journey.”
One of her standout memories came when the team clinched the West District League title. “That was special,” she recalled. “We worked so hard and the celebrations after — unforgettable.”
But for Gillian, it wasn’t just about the wins.

“It’s the friendships, the laughs in the changing rooms, the team spirit — that’s what I’ll miss most,” she said.
Although she’s stepping off the field, she hopes to stay involved with the club in a coaching or mentoring role.
“Hockey gave me so much. Now it’s time to help others enjoy it too.”
As she hangs up her stick, there’s no doubt she leaves behind a legacy of dedication, sportsmanship, and heart.
“It’s been an incredible journey,” she said. “I’m just so grateful I got to be part of it.”
