Euro Hockey League 2025: Can Old Georgians create British club history?

The ABN AMRO EHL FINALS heads to HC ’s-Hertogenbosch for the first time for a six-day carnival of hockey, running from April 16 to 21.

There will be 26 matches in the world’s best club competition for men and women, with new champions set to lift the tropies on Easter Monday.

Expanded EHL Women

EHL Women has expanded from eight teams to 12 with an extra team from Spain and Belgium added to the qualifiers list along with a team from Ukraine and Czechia.

They will all compete in a newly introduced first phase of the competition, hoping to make it through to the FINAL8 where host club Den Bosch, Düsseldorfer HC, Gantoise and Real Club de Polo await. Surbiton are one of those clubs in Wednesday’s openers, taking on Slavia Prague (11.30 BST).

Surbiton are looking to negotiate their way to the FINAL4 for the first time having picked up fifth and seventh place rankings in their most recent appearances in EHL Women.

Men’s grand finalists galore

The ABN AMRO EHL Men’s FINAL8 takes on the now traditional quarter-final knock-out format with eight of Europe’s best sides battling it out for glory at HC ’s-Hertogenbosch.

It is a line-up packed with two former champions, four former grand finalists while seven of the sides have won medals in the world’s best club competition.

It begins on Thursday evening when 2016 winners SV Kampong face 2022 bronze medalists Surbiton (16.15 BST) before six-time champions Bloemendaal meet 2011 runners-up Club de Campo (18.30 BST).

Old Georgians are looking to build further on their status following their breakthrough EHL bronze a year ago at the Wagener Stadium, against HC Rotterdam on Friday (16.45 BST).

OGs are seemingly in unstoppable mood if the English Premier Division is anything to go by and knocked in their 100th goal of their domestic campaign at the weekend in just 18 games.

However they will have to raise their stock further in Europe, where no British men’s club has reached the EHL final before.

This will be charismatic George Pinner’s final continental competitio while they take on a Rotterdam side who are hoping to bid an emotional farewell to EHL’s record goalscorer Jeroen Hertzberger. The Dutchman will depart from the first team this summer after 22 seasons.

His final seconds equaliser against Hamburger Polo Club was the moment of the KO16 and will live long in the memory.
