Memorial hockey match honours late GB eventing rider

A memorial hockey match was played last month to remember the late British event rider Georgie Campbell.

Friends and family gathered for a commemorative hockey game at Cranbrook, Kent.

The Georgie Campbell Foundation Memorial Hockey Game served not only as a remembrance of her vibrant spirit but also as a fundraiser to enhance safety in eventing and support aspiring young riders.

The event raised over £3,000 for the Georgie Campbell Foundation, a charity established by her loved ones with a mission to make the sport safer and help young eventers achieve their dreams.

Best friend Abbie Fernandes shared her reflections on Campbell’s competitive nature, noting: “She will be laughing at how stiff we all are, but she will also be cross with us if we lose, so no pressure.”

Georgie tragically passed away at the age of 36 after a fall from her horse at the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon in May 2024.

She was well-known for her talents on the hockey field, having served as the captain of her team during her time at Cranbrook School.

She captained the girls’ 1s in the 2005/2006 season.

She then pursued a sports science degree at Nottingham Trent University, where she continued to shine in athletics. She played for the university’s 1st XI hockey team and was part of the equestrian team that secured gold at the British Student Equestrian Championships in 2009.
