Brooklands MU pip Loughborough to Premier Division promotion

Brooklands MU won promotion to England Hockey’s Men’s Premier Division after a dramatic final few moments to end the Division 1 North season.

With Loughborough Students leading 2-0 and then 3-2 against Durham University, the hosts were on the verge of Premier Division hockey for the first time.

However, Kristofer Watt’s 70th minute penalty corner goal, to add to his 46th minute strike for Durham, broke Loughborough hearts.

All Brooklands MU could do was hope for a Loughborough loss or draw on Sunday – and win their game at home.

They duly won 3-1 over University of Nottingham, stalwart Peter Flanagan and a double from James Sutcliffe proving the difference.

It meant that Brooklands pipped Loughborough by one point to seal promotion back to the top flight for the first time since 2023.

The draw for Loughborough was double agony after UoN staged a superb comeback in the BUCS Big Wednesday final to defeat the Students in a shoot-out the previous week.
