Barnes women taste title success and Premier Division promotion

Barnes women recorded a major milestone as they confirmed their passage to the England Hockey Premier Division for the first time in the club’s history.

By beating Surbiton 2s in Division One South, Barnes will now join perennial champs Surbiton 1s in the top flight courtesy of a super come-from-behind 5-2 win.

History was ushered in when the team was addressed in the post-game huddle by former international Katie Dodd, who had played for Ealing when they were a top tier side in the late 70s.

Ealing were one one of the clubs, along with Hounslow, who then merged over the last 25 years to form the current iteration of Barnes HC today.

“The fact that this club holds a strong place in people’s hearts, they want to see the club rising and it’s been amazing to see us take a step in that direction,” said Shibli, who reflected on Barnes’ 4-1 win against Uni of Exeter as a key turning point for title glory.

“We are excited about what the future could hold for us now. We will enjoy the success.”

Barnes were indebted to Aleesa Ferguson’s and Alice Hiddleston’s double and Lara Tegner’s strike as they ran riot in the second-half.

The win leaves them four points clear of season rivals Exeter. Barnes will play at home against Harleston Magpies this weekend.

“To go to Surbiton, it was notable to feel our support which was vocal and loud and made it feel like a home game,” said Shibli.

“So to make the game this weekend a celebration with fans and family will be a spectacular thing. We will really enjoy the moment.”

At the bottom, either Slough or Wimbledon 2s will be relegated.

In Women’s Division One North, Durham University need a point on the final day to confirm their rise to the top tier.

Durham are three points clear of Beeston and both face trips on the road.

Durham are at Gloucester City and the Bees travel to Ben Rhydding.

Beeston currently have a +2 better goal difference should results go their way.

Wakefield are relegated.
