Be kinder to umpires, learn how to drag flick: 10 requests for the hockey family

With clubs and pitches back in action after the winter break, one reader has gathered his hopes and thoughts for the hockey family to consider.

1. Don’t steal balls from other clubs, especially at junior fixtures as that’s just breeding another generation of ball thieves!

2. Re-grip your stick and put your astro boots and shin pads through the wash more, your team mates will thank you

3. Keep your availability updated on whatever App your club’s using, it’s a hard life being a captain

4. Be kinder to England Hockey, they’re doing their best and probably haven’t got any money to replace GMS

5. Be kinder to umpires

6. Go back for teas and socialise with the opposition more, even if you lost

7. Respond to club emails confirming matches, not necessarily straight away, just so that you don’t make people chase you

8. If you have to cancel an away game at short notice, offer to pay pitch costs, it’s the decent thing to do

9. Always reciprocate friendly matches, even if you lost

10. Learn how to drag-flick
