FIH Hockey Pro League: ‘Hollywood’ Sam Ward and other talking points

The Hockey Paper runs the rule over the recent Pro League matches ahead of the three-month global competition break

Ward a forgettable moment

Only four red cards had been issued at Test match level since 2013 before Amit Rohidas’ sending off in the Olympic quarter-finals. On Monday it looked as if India would receive successive reds when the umpire went upstairs. This after England, who held on for a fine 3-2 win, appealed for misconduct when captain Sam Ward went down in his own D.

And then we saw the replay in slow-mo involving Sukhjeet and how Ward really ‘went down’. In football, moments like this would be across social media and soon forgotten about until the next talking point.
