Germany is gearing up to host the 2025 EuroHockey Championships, an event set to cost an estimated €3 million, according to the German Hockey Federation (DHB).
The €3m budget underscores the scale of the tournament, with DHB Sports Director Martin Schultze saying: “Organizsng an event of this magnitude is a financial and logistical challenge, but also an incredible opportunity to grow hockey’s popularity in Germany.”
Mönchengladbach’s Mayor, Felix Heinrichs, expressed the city’s pride in hosting the championship again. “We’ve proven we can deliver world-class events, and with our experience, we’ll make the 2025 EuroHockey Championships even more memorable. This also coincides with the city’s 50th anniversary, making it extra special,” he said.
Scheduled to take place from Aug 8 to 17, the tournament will be held at the SparkassenPark in Mönchengladbach, a venue with a rich history of hosting hockey events, including previous EuroHockey editions in 2011 and 2023.
The 2025 edition will include 40 matches, with teams also competing for spots at the 2026 World Cup. Powerhouses such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and England have already secured their places, with the remaining teams to be finalized through qualifiers later this year.
Beyond the main event, the EuroHockey ID Championship, promoting inclusivity within the sport, will run concurrently at the GTHC (Mönchengladbach Hockey Club). Its finals will also be held at the HockeyPark.
Organisers aim to surpass the success of the 2023 championship, which drew over 70,000 fans to Mönchengladbach.
Schultze acknowledged concerns about audience saturation but expressed confidence: “When an opportunity like this arises, it’s crucial to seize it. We are confident the fans will come.”
