Women’s Hockey India League: Odisha Warriors take first title amid Yibbi Jansen bounty

Ranchi — Familiar as she is in the orange colours of Odisha as she is the Oranje of the Dutch team with her trademark headband, Yibbi Jansen was for once upstaged by an Indian team-mate, 22-year-old Rutaja Pisal, who thrust herself into the spotlight as Odisha Warriors won the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League.

On Republic Day, Pisal scored a brace of contrasting skill, the first an unwitting deflection off her stick and then a clean strike through Savita’s legs four minutes from time, with Odisha beating top-of-the-table rivals Soorma 2-0 in front of a packed 7,000 Ranchi crowd.
