Indoor hockey university competition set for Nottingham

A teacher and former student are organising a Universities Indoor Hockey Tournament at David Ross Sports Centre, Nottingham on Friday.

Calum Crichton, head of hockey at King Edward VI School, Southampton, and Harry Croft-Baker, head of indoor hockey at Nottingham University are hosting a one-day event on Jan 10.

“This idea came about after several players I coached at KES, who are now playing at university, expressed their desire for a university-level indoor competition,” said Crichton.

Croft-Baker, who is also a former England junior age group player, and Crichton took up the initiative to set up the tournament and have signed eight uni teams.

With only four women’s teams participating, the hope is for more to sign up in 2026.

Crichton added: “We’ve had many positive conversations with universities that couldn’t join us this year, and we’re planning to hold the tournament before Christmas next year to give them ample time to prepare.”

Here are the universities participating this year:

Pool A

  • Sheffield Hallam
  • University of Southampton
  • Cardiff University
  • University of Cambridge
  • University of Nottingham 2s

Pool B

  • University of Sheffield
  • Cardiff Metropolitan
  • Warwick University
  • University of Nottingham
