‘Top hockey players should act as own agents now’ – Harte

While the bigger beast in franchise sport, cricket’s Indian Premier League (IPL), have agents and managers galore looking after players and financial opportunities, it has yet to filter down to hockey.

That may change over the next 10 years, with franchises now signed up to the returning Hockey India League (HIL).

It could change the face of hockey too, in terms of extra sponsors coming into the game and the commercial opportunities which may present itself for players in India. And those seeking to keep a healthy bank balance every January.

Asked whether players should now act as their own agent or manager, Tamil Nadu Dragons goalkeeper David Harte, who also appeared in the first HIL, told The Hockey Paper: “It would be a smart way to approach it.”
