Hockey India League: Franchise future, player exodus, TV rights and impact

The Hockey Paper runs the rule over the returning Hockey India League (HIL), players pulling out, those staying, what the owners say, media rights and the future

Back in 2013, money seemed no object as franchises were found, a pretty sum paid to players and teams flying across India as the first HIL took shape. It wasn’t long, four years to be precise, for the competition to fall flat after financial woes took hold. 

Now, seven years further forward, it seems that the new set of owners are wiser and more in tune with the whole franchise model, the market leading IPL having taken several years to break even.
