England Hockey Premier Division: Richmond claim first victory

Richmond won their first Premier Division game on Saturday, while Old Georgians were tested before strengthening their stranglehold at the top of the men’s top flight.

On a double header weekend, Richmond beat Bowdon 3-1 at home to lift themselves off the bottom, ensuring the points as Zach Mason scored two minutes from time.

Beeston came closest to denying Old Georgians perennial three points as the league leaders came through 3-2.

Luke Taylor netted at the death to secure a point for Surbiton in a 4-4 draw at Holcombe.

They then returned home to beat Beeston 5-2 on Sunday, with Holcombe winning 4-2 at East Grinstead, Teague Marcano scoring a hat-trick.

Cardiff & Met routed Richmond 7-0 Owan Dolan Gray, Scott Rawlings and William Riley netting braces. Their 3-2 win at Oxted on Saturday leaves the Welsh side in sixth place.

In the Women’s Premier Division, Reading were denied a sixth win in a row when Darcy Bourne scored from a penalty corner nine minutes from time.

Her second of the game saw Surbiton draw 4-4 against the league leaders and staved off a double header defeat after going down 2-0 at home to H&W on Saturday, with Rose Tynan and Sofia Martin on the scoresheet.

The Londoners remain second in the table as Lucy Hyams secured a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Wimbledon.

Out of form Clifton Robinsons won their first match of the season, 3-2 against Loughborough Students on Saturday, and remain second from bottom.

Holcombe lost both games over the weekend against Reading and EG following Nick Bandurak’s removal last week as head coach.
