How ‘classic Tunbridge Wells’ made history with national league hockey

As those associated with Tunbridge Wells Hockey Club describe their history-making season with words such as ‘chaotic’, ‘frantic’ and ‘squeaky bum time’, a picture starts to develop of their most pivotal games last season.

The men’s 1s won promotion to the national league for the first time ever after defeating Horsham 6-5 in a match which, according to club chair Francis Bridgeman, was “classic Tunbridge Wells”.

But such descriptions deceive the real story of the season, that ultimately Tunbridge Wells had learnt how to win, and they did it well. A league-topping 95 goals scored with just one draw and one loss all season is what saw them promoted in their 125th anniversary year.
