England Hockey Premier Division: Goals galore as season starts at pace

Surbiton and Wimbledon warmed up for this weekend’s men’s Hockey League KO16 by serving up goal fests.

Visitors Surbiton trounced Premier Division newcomers Richmond 8-0, with Struan Walker netting a hat-trick and Luke Taylor scoring a brace.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon beat Bowdon 6-0 as club returnee Liam Ansell scored his first goals of the season, firing either side of the break.

Oxted beat local rivals East Grinstead 4-2 in an always-frenetic derby and Holcombe kept up their unbeaten start by beating Cardiff & Met 4-1 in Wales.

H&W were indebted to Kei Kaeppeler for a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 home draw with Beeston, who beat Richmond on Sunday after last weekend’s abandonment.

Old Georgians are the early pace setters on goal difference after easing past Southgate 8-1. A familiar tale: Sam Ward hat-trick and two for Alan Forsyth.

In the women’s top flight on Saturday, Surbiton, Reading, EG and Holcombe all have two wins from two.

Surbiton were the standouts, with a 6-1 win over UoN, while East Grinstead’s Biba Mills scored two on the road at Sutton Coldfield in a 3-0 win.

Caroline Spence also scored two in Reading’s 3-0 victory over Clifton Robinsons.

Surbiton and Wimbledon will go head-to-head at Sugden Road on Saturday evening, with the EHL into its third day of action.
