Hockey umpire praises club after mother passes away

A hockey umpire has praised the club he was officiating at when his mother died during a tournament he was officiating at.

Roger Jarvis’ mother passed away while he was umpiring at a regional tournament in Nottingham last month. She had suffered from leukemia and the family had been supported by Marie Curie UK.

Jarvis, of North Wales Hockey Academy, praised the “kindness of the hockey family and of the Leeds club in particular.”

“The players, families and officials were very generous with their time and the Leeds Club, with whom I was officiating, has raised over £1,200 and online pledges,” he said.

“We had been supported by incredible Marie Curie nurses over recent weeks and it soon became very clear how many people in the UK have received the same support from Marie Curie.

“The Leeds Club provide all the officials at this tournament and they leapt into action to raise funds and to highlight the care that so many people receive.

“I would like to take the opportunity to say a gargantuan thank-you to all the players, families and officials who were so generous with their wishes and their wallets. A special mention to the Leeds Club, whose professionalism on the pitch is matched by their kindness off it. Hockey is certainly a family sport!”
