Paris Olympics Hockey: Brilliant Spain oust defending champions Belgium

Paris — This wasn’t over until the last seconds. Spain, 3-2 up, thought they had initially won it as a late circle move was cleared. Belgium appealed, the umpires conferred and the Red Lionshad one final stab at keeping their Olympic men’s defence alive. 

Alexander Hendrickx was left with his arms on his head, revealing his Olympic rings’ tattoo. Their dream was over, which will also likely signal the end of several thirty-something players. Conversely, Spain, with the youngest squad in Paris, were in their first Olympic semi-final since the great Spanish team of 2008.

“It’s crazy that Spain hasn’t been in the top four of the Olympics for so long,” captain Marc Miralles said afterwards.
