Paris Olympics Hockey: Meet the South Africa coach doing job for nothing

Paris — Around 12 months out from the Paris Olympics, coach Giles Bonnet set about whittling down his 30-strong South Africa squad. He asked for a commitment from his players, all of whom are unpaid as national players. So is Bonnet, who took on the ‘project’ as he also owns a guest house in Cape Town.

Bonnet managed to get a squad which could take five weeks off to go to China where they played a series of provincial teams, while also travelling to India.

  1. I have been so moved by the gallant spirit of the South Africans. Of course I was pleased as an American that USA won today, but I wished we could both win.
