Paris Olympics Hockey: Great Britain men edge past spirited France

Paris — In 2018, France beat an England side for the first time since a friendly 30 years prior in Lille. “It showed that we were indeed able to compete with a world top nation,” Victor Charlet said at the time. The same month, L’Equipe profiled the sport in a big feature entitled ‘The not-so-insane mission of French hockey’. 

Six years on, a gallant, mission-spirited France by the Seine came oh so mightily close to fulfilling their quest to mix it with the powerhouse nations, keep their Olympic bid alive and take Great Britain with them heading into Friday’s final round of Pool matches. All against the run of play. Following the lively Timothee Clement’s first-half goal through British sticks, it took second-half strikes from Zach Wallace (penalty stroke) and a crucial touch from James Albery to see off the hosts. A draw would have taken the Pool to the wire.
