View from the sofa: Watching Paris Olympics Hockey on TV

Simon Webb has watched most of the Paris Olympics and offers his opinion on the hockey production

As a bit of a hockey keeno it’s been an infuriating experience so far! It started well with Simon Mason and the BBC, a voice you can rely on to offer expert insight while also making the newbies feel welcome.

While commentary was exactly what you’d expect, the production was lacking. At every Olympics this is a problem. Cutting to the crowd, playing slow motion replays, unaware that the ball could go from one end to the other in a couple of seconds. Missing key moments and context.

  1. Totally agree BBC scheduling and finding it a nightmare; I too went to D+. Commentary there is lacking a bit with not naming platters on the ball and just general rather than specific comments. But at least you see the games!

  2. I’ve spoken with Simon before about the lack of understanding of the game play. It’s any tournament where there is a host broadcaster controlling the coverage. ProLeague etc broadcast teams and directors have the game knowledge to give best experience. I’ve gone to D+ as well and, as you say Phil, commentary is not great but you seea whole game.
