Paris Olympics Hockey: Team GB women find Australia too hot to handle

Paris — This was a day when mountain biker Tom Pidcock summoned one of the great Olympic moves and then, during this coasting win for Australia women at the hockey, Nicolas Gestin drove his way thrillingly to canoe slalom gold. Great Britain women, meanwhile, could offer neither skill. Their Olympics is fast turning to ashes after this Australia pummelling. 

The respite for Great Britain women? The sight, shortly after GB’s 4-0 defeat, of Argentina strolling to three late goals in their come-from-behind victory over a menacing South Africa outfit. GB sit bottom of their Pool, locked pointless with South Africa. The two meet each other next in the first hurdle of their resurrection bid. But don’t rule out GB yet. They have enough Olympic experience to turn their campaign around.

For against Australia, Great Britain came off second best in all departments: circle finishing, possession, final third skill and even player contact skirmishes.
