Paris Olympics Hockey: Australia’s Matthew Dawson ‘passed out’ after amputated finger

Paris — “You wouldn’t really know, would you? Just the same size as a pinkie!” joked Matthew Dawson. That was the verdict of the Australian after coming through his first 60-minute test after making global headlines in the build-up to the Olympics.

It has been a remarkable tale for the Kookaburra, who probably didn’t realise how big the story would get when he gave a one-on-one interview to an Australian TV network before flying to Paris.

From the BBC to the New York Times and beyond, hundreds of articles were written about Dawson’s decision to amputate the top of his right ring finger, from the knuckle up, after an inter squad match against Australia A. Given the headlines, it was a surprise to see only two written media, this publication included, who interviewed Dawson after the game.

“It’s a pretty unique story in the choice that I made and I stand 100% by my choice,” Dawson told The Hockey Paper after Australia had beaten Argentina 1-0 in their men’s pool opener.
