‘Hell of a journey’: GB’s Nick Park relishes Paris Olympic Hockey opener

Paris — It is 100 years since Eric Liddell won gold in the Paris 1924 Games at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir. Nick Park was unaware of the Chariots of Fire link but not of the stadium history. On Saturday, he fizzed down the left with the same aplomb in British colours, albeit in a different sport, and created a landmark of his own — the first goal of the Olympic tournament here.

His wondrous goal paved the way for GB’s opening 4-0 victory over Spain. And watching in the stands were his mum and dad, soon to be joined by his sister and family.
