In a display of Olympian commitment to his sport and country, Australian hockey player Matthew Dawson has made headlines by choosing to amputate part of his right ring finger to ensure his participation at Paris 2024.
Dawson, part of the Kookaburras’ silver-winning team in Tokyo, faced a critical decision after breaking his finger recently, jeopardisng his chances of competing in Paris.
With doctors offering him the choice between lengthy rehabilitation or amputation, the 30-year-old athlete opted for surgery to remove the top portion of his finger.
Explaining his reason to Australia’s Channel Seven before departing for France, Dawson said: “I made an informed decision with the plastic surgeon at the time not only for the opportunity to play in Paris but for life after as well.”
He acknowledged the gravity of his choice, stating: “It’s a bit of a change at the moment and an exciting challenge, I guess.”
Australian coach Colin Batch praised Dawson’s resolve, emphasising that such a decision was deeply personal. “It’s not something a coach can decide for a player,” Batch told the broadcaster.
“Full marks to Matt. Obviously he’s really committed to playing in Paris. I’m not sure I would have done it, but he’s done it, so great.”
Six years ago, Dawson narrowly escaped a serious eye injury when struck by a hockey stick.
