Hockey Pro League: USA record rare win over uninspired Great Britain women

London — Part-timers USA will next play Great Britain on the first day of August at the Paris Olympics. Their summer began to sizzle here after the Pro League’s bottom side deservedly won 3-1 over GB, who have now given David Passmore’s side reason to believe they can do the same when it counts next month.

This was a first win in eight years over GB – with goals from Megan Valzonis, Ashley Sessa and  Meredith Sholder – their last coming a few weeks before GB won in Rio, and which here stopped a run of seven Pro League defeats.

It was also a victory – coach David Ralph was unavailable for comment after the match – which seemed a distinct long shot after the front-foot hockey offered by GB in the opening six minutes.
