Olympic cash prizes ‘not on agenda’ for world hockey

The return of the Hockey India League can’t come soon enough for the sport’s top stars — at least when it comes to earning power.

While the auction and monetary value of the HIL players are yet to emerge, for now it is the player paypackets from national federations, clubs (club-first salaries in most cases) and limited sponsorship due to hockey’s lack of exposure.

The recent move by World Athletics to offer athletes $50,000 (nearly £40,000) for gold medals at Paris 2024 caused a stir within the Olympic movement when it was announced in April.
