Torbay stages Easter hockey festival to savour in the sun

A successful and combative four days of Easter festival hockey was played out in a sun-blessed Torbay.

It ended with The Midwives (Trinity Midwhitgiftians) from Sanderstead romping away with the Bill Stickells Cup for the highest scoring team, with a total of 46 goals.

The Esandars, from Bristol, were a distant second with 33 goals. The Midwives have had two previous Cup wins, in 2000 and 2009.

The Esandars were the only unbeaten team, with six wins and a draw.

The race for the Redcliffe Hotel Cup for Fair Play, where teams rate their opponents on how they played in teams of good spirit, was  much more tightly contested; so close in fact that three teams were jointly awarded the Cup – going to Bluebottles, Clleevillians and Oddfellows. The last three- way tie occurred in 2008.

Planning for the 2024 Festival has already started, with a year round campaign to increase the number of participating teams the major element.
