Germany star Niklas Wellen becomes dad at Hockey World Cup

Bhubaneswar — Niklas Wellen became a father, scored in Germany’s 2-2 draw, saw a picture of his newborn at half-time and finished as player of the match during an eventful and emotional night against World Cup holders Belgium on Tuesday night.

Germany men’s coach André Henning revealed that Wellen, who scored Germany’s opener, was messaged the good news before the game in the Kalinga Stadium dressing room.

“He got some messages before the game,” said Henning. “He didn’t get any reception as there were so many people around and no wifi.
