Seen & Heard: Teen and family hockey umpires to the fore

The Hockey Paper brings you the latest slice of club and international news from the UK and across the globe

Brighton & Hove HC are heaping praise on 14-year-old Callum Shuttlewood, pictured above, who passed his Level 1 Umpiring award this month “with flying colours”.

Callum started umpiring recently, took the online Level 1 Theory course and gained the qualification in two months.

Umpiring the men’s 7s against Crowborough 2s, pupil Callum gave an impressive performance with a high score and was highly complimented by the Crowborough captain. “Our best umpire this season,” he said.

Callum also plays for Brighton & Hove’s Under-16 Boys and the men’s 9s. “The club would welcome players, whether junior or adult, to take the Level 1 Umpiring award with the initial aim to help umpire our many teams, at least on an occasional basis,” says Alan Grey, Sussex Young Umpires Coach and coordinator and long-standing BHHC member.

A sport for all ages, said Wallingford HC after Eliza Haigh, aged 13, recently played her first adult match for the club’s women’s 4s.

And in goal for the other team? Step forward Sue Hicks for Sonning Hockey Club – 57 years Eliza’s senior!

We all know how hockey can bring together families playing the sport. At Portrane HC, a father and daughter umpired the same game together earlier this season, officiating an under 16 boys league game against Clontarf

Darran Neville and his daughter Keala contributed to a terrific game of hockey that finished 3-3,” the club said.

“They let the game flow and played an integral part in what was a great game of hockey. Darran is an incredible club volunteer giving so much back to his beloved club and he shows this every weekend by umpiring so many games.

“So it’s great to see his daughter Keala who is following in her Dads footsteps volunteer to take on the tough job of been a referee!”

Talking point:

Japan’s rainbow umpiring shirts were a huge hit at the World Masters Hockey World Cup in Tokyo.

According to the world body, they were introduced into Japan Hockey almost 20 years ago by ex-international umpire Mr Masato Senno.

“A big ARIGATO to Senno-san for brightening our hockey venues,” said the WMH to top off a memorable year for World Cups.
