Future Scottish hockey stars attract main sponsor

Utilities infrastructure and engineering services company, Avove, has signed a sponsorship deal to support Scotland’s Aspiring Girls under 18s hockey team.

The two-year deal will go a long way to supporting the athletes as they develop into tomorrow’s senior internationalists, with hope of representing their nation in future Commonwealth Games and following in the footsteps of Borders-born Olympic bronze medallist and captain Sarah Robertson.

Launched as part of Scottish Women and Girls in Sport week campaign #SheCanSheWill, the sponsorship deal saw Avove’s logo taking pride of place on the front of the team’s newly designed Under 18s home and away kits.

Barry Cawte, CEO of Scottish Hockey, said: “This tremendous support from Avove will help us to sustain and enhance the quality of development opportunities available to our talented athletes in the Scotland Aspiring Girls’ squad.

“Avove is a highly regarded business and shares the same values as Scottish Hockey, and we look forward to working together to support our fantastic young athletes.

“The Scotland Aspiring Girls hockey team have a lot of exciting action on the horizon building towards next year’s European Championships on the back of the recent 8-nations tournament in Spain. With their own plans for growth, development, achievement and success in the future, the synergy between our organisations is unmistakable.”

Avove’s Executive Chair, Mark Perkins, said: “Following on from the success of hockey in the Commonwealth Games, we firmly believe that team sports have a positive effect on mental health, and help players to build their self-esteem and confidence, and develop crucial employability skills such as teamwork, strategic thinking and leadership.

“Avove shares many synergies with Scottish Hockey, and we are thrilled to support a sport as inclusive as women’s hockey that has seen unprecedented growth in recent years.”

The new kits, ethically produced by New Balance, were unveiled across all Scottish Hockey’s age groups following the Commonwealth Games.

Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week was in its sixth year and celebrates ‘visibility and partnerships’ – activity encouraging participation of girls and women in physical activity and sport, which remains a priority for the Scottish Government #SheCanSheWill.
