‘Why can’t we go into the unknown?’: players back 2026 men’s Hockey World Cup bid

Big and bold. This is England Hockey’s stance as it visualises filling Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with 60,000 hockey fans after further outlining its ambitious bid to host the 2026 men’s World Cup.

England and Welsh players toured the north London stadium on Wednesday. And standing pitchside, the mere thought of playing hockey at this modern venue was a tantalising one. Let alone the host nation running out for a World Cup final in front of what would be a record crowd by some distance in the modern era.

England’s Jack Waller, a self-confessed Arsenal fan who won Commonwealth bronze this summer, could only concur: “The thought of walking down the tunnel and seeing a packed stadium for a semi-final and final is an incredible thought.”
