Las Leonas player receives Tokyo hockey silver after car stolen

Las Leonas player Sofía Maccari has received a replacement Olympic medal after her Tokyo prize was stolen last year.

The Argentine Olympic Committee (COA) staged a ceremony over the summer to award Maccari another Tokyo 2020 silver medal.

Maccari’s medal would have meant much to her after the now 38-year-old was recalled to Las Leonas squad in 2020, seven years after being axed.

Maccari was part of the Argentina women’s team which finished with silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

However less than a month later her car was stolen with the medal inside and has never been found.

“We are happy and content for Sofia, and for the role we were able to play to help this end well,” COA President Mario Moccia said.

Moccia added that it required “so much effort” to win an Olympic prize and relished the opportunity for a replacement.

Maccari also won an Olympic silver at London 2012.
