German club lays down first Hockey 5s surface

Bremer Hockey Club has become the first in Germany to lay a Hockey 5s surface.

The club now has 1,100 members across its sports club and has been expanded to feature an outdoor fitness area, a three-lane athletic track, a Hockey5s surface and two padel courts.

“I’ve been following the development of Hockey5 very closely since it started in 2014 on the international stage and I’m therefore pleased that Bremer HC was the first German hockey club to build and inaugurate an H5 field,” former international Lisa Altenburg, told Hockey Magazin.

“In hockey Germany, the new hockey format has understandably been much discussed and at the same time little tested. That will change in the coming years.

“The BHC has taken on the pioneering role here, and other clubs will follow suit.

“From a sporting point of view, Hockey 5s supports the development of an attractive and successful Hockey 11 game.

“And since both the rules and the quality of the boards have improved in recent years, the format is now suitable for young and old as well as for beginners to top players.”

The new format was also described as “indoor hockey in the fresh air with 3D technology”.

  1. “Indoor hockey in the fresh air” is an apt description of Hockey5s. It is also an easier to understand version of indoor hockey with complicated concepts like penalty corner removed and 1 player reduced from each team to encourage offensive play.
