Timing and age of player development are difficult to ascertain across the world of sport. There is such a focus on junior players and the support that they receive to maximize their potential. However, there are so many factors affecting youngsters and their perceived ability.
The obvious issue is the physical development of the child. So regularly we see the quickest and strongest players dominating teenage matches due to their obvious visible advantages.
Pace is so crucial in the sport, that it is hard to establish the youngsters with the most potential as it is difficult to predict when, or if, their speed will develop.

Very good line of argument here – our pool of international players ultimately becomes smaller as a result, with the huge drop off between full time athletes and the next rung down
