Rhys Smith last played in the Euro Hockey League as an ‘out of depth, immature’ 17-year-old. Eight years on, the England and GB international will return to the European club stage with Wimbledon after the national indoor champions finished second in the outdoor Premier Division to cap a fine season.
Wimbledon overcame Old Georgians 3-2 on Saturday in a physical, vocal battle – the two rivals now taking their place in European club competition for 2022/23.
“When you play the top four it’s always going to be a tough clash,” Smith told The Hockey Paper. “We know them so well now and as a result there is a lot of tension in the game. It being the last game of the season and a big importance for us, you could tell that came out in the passion.”
